I wanted to write this article to help various graduates finding graduate jobs. I have recently graduated from Southampton University in the UK and am currently looking for my first job. I graduated in business finance and my dream employment position would be working as a financial consultant somewhere/anywhere! It is a common fact that many people have a real hard in time in finding any employment after University but I never knew it was this hard! When I completed studying at University in June I wasn’t even thinking of finding a job but now I can’t think of anything else!
The first crucial mistake to make when trying to find a graduate job after studying is getting there too late. Students from all around the world could potentially want the same job as you are going for so timing is everything. You have to get in the face of employers and express to them that you want the job more than any other candidate who is applying for the job as well. Having a good CV and well spoken voice on the phone are essential.
Timing is one thing. Experience is another. I have been on the phone to several potential graduate employers and they all have one thing in common. The need for industry experience. This is quite possibly the biggest clash in getting a desired graduate job. As you have been a student for either three or four years you are lacking in any relevant industry experience. It gets frustrating after a while to actually hope that an employer will give you a chance or at least give you some helpful advice to guide you into the right area. Subsequently, getting that chance can open so many doors. Once you have experience and a degree you are highly employable by a lot of companies around the world. Yet it is just getting you into that first job.
There are plenty of recruitment agencies around the country that can help but if you ask me good old fashioned research and phone calls are what gets you the furthest ahead. Going through agencies would cut out a lot of hassle but you are losing the personal edge of talking to your potential employer yourself which is far more favourable. I would recommend having a few days to search on the internet for the area of employment you would like to target and simply, phone, phone, phone! In my opinion that is the only way to get somewhere!
